Critical Reading and Writing

RECEPTIVE READING → ACTIVE READING

SURFACE-LEVEL READING → CRITICAL READING

The objective of our Critical Reading and Writing program is to encourage students to read actively and to construct knowledge as they read so they are able to change their habits from reading on the surface level to reading critically. We encourage students to ask questions and engage the difficulty of texts, rather than give up if they do not "get it." We also teach students to respond in their writing in an in-depth and analytical way that indicates an understanding of the text and ability to make inferences and assumptions. By the end of the course, students are able to read in a way that allows them to comprehend literature more actively and creatively and write in a way that communicates their stances in a clear, persuasive way.
